Our mission to improve lives.
To assist and fully integrate Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders.
Our Mission
Miilan’s mission is to support and give new hope to Australians in need of better standards ofeducation, employment, health, housing and training.
Miilan is a not-for-profit organisation or charity that aims to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders. Its goal is to assist them in fully integrating into Australian society while simultaneously maintaining, respecting, and strengthening their long and rich heritage, cultures, customs, and languages.
Miilan is a Wiradjuri word meaning “The first ray of a new day” In essence that is Miilan. A new day is dawning with new homes, new opportunities, new jobs, new business and new hope for the future.
We believe the hand out system needs to end.
We will achieve our mission by:
▣ Improving education, employment, health, housing and training for these people
▣ Encouraging these people to identify the missing piece or pieces of their circumstances in these categories
▣ Assisting them to discover and define their solution to the challenges they face ▣ Providing funding and support where possible and necessary to assist in solving their challenges asking and achieving opportunities for employment of Australian people, particularly in the fields of mining, education and health ▣ Providing and funding technical assistance within Miilan’s five fold platform ▣ Seeking funding wherever available to assist in the achievement of successful outcomes for the participants in the improvement of circumstances for these people ▣ Identifying opportunities for employment and making those opportunities known to suitable employee applicants ▣ Providing coaching for employment interviews to enhance the potential for success of the applicant in obtaining the position sought.

Our Action Plan:
Education
- Increasing the availability of resources in remote and socially disadvantaged areas. Establishing partial scholarships to tertiary and secondary institutions (partial status is important as there must be an element of self help to ensure commitment and contribution by the student) (a hand up, walk alongside approach – not a hand out strategy). Provision of Wi-Fi availability in remote communities to better enable and equip education programs. Provision of additional laptop computers and computer equipment by facilitating the distribution of equipment surplus to government agencies and businesses to people in need where they are unable to provide these facilities for themselves. This will include remote areas and people in socially disadvantaged areas.
- Education will include crime and domestic violence reduction and prevention where possible.
- A separate section of the website, will be dedicated to health issues, health improvement, dietary changes and beneficial outcomes, the use of health promoting foods and the disadvantages of the overuse of foods such as potatoes, onions and pumpkins that can cause dietary imbalances.
Employment
- Providing increased employment by assisting people to establish their own businesses, particularly in remote and rural areas. This will continue to include trades and occupations associated with the mining industry, pastoral operations, mine site rehabilitation, tourism, cultivation of food and remedy ingredients and the supply of these items to Australian and overseas markets.
- Equipping people for successful job application, form completion and job application and interview skills.
- Installation of fixed equipment in country areas e.g. solar lighting and power generation and Wi-Fi capability.
Health
- Increasing awareness of the negative aspects of poor diets.
- Continuing education on the results of high potato, onion and pumpkin, on long term health outcomes.
- Continuing education on the causes and impact of high sugar levels and poor diet on the incidence and impact of diabetes.
- Continuing education on the long term outcome of diabetes and health and life expectancy.
- Establishment of health clinics and dialysis clinics in remote locations. These clinics will include health education and health care to focus on improving and changing the future rather than just treating the current difficulties and allowing the status quo to continue.
- Establishment of dry out clinics/camps and rehabilitation centres in remote areas.
Housing
- Continuation and improvement of our housing design appropriate to needs and at economical prices for socially disadvantaged and remote areas.
- Continued facilitation of housing construction using environmentally and economically sustainable practices and materials appropriate to remote, urban and suburban areas.
- Continuation of housing projects in remote areas to facilitate employment and training of persons new to the building trades.
- Continued investigation of building methods and materials to maintain awareness of developments in the industry that increase efficiencies in time and resources in this sector.
- Where possible, including the proposed homeowner in the construction of the home to foster pride of ownership, and inclusion in the selection of materials and finishes which also contributes to reducing the cost of the home to the recipient of the home. This inclusion is expected to reduce future maintenance and vandalism of the property.
- Where possible include training in construction and maintenance. This inclusion can then equip the trainees to assist other home builders and foster building community effort and values.
Training
- Continuing advocacy for the training of people to assist in gaining meaningful employment.
- Facilitating and providing access to industry appropriate training, for example, licensing for heavy vehicle driving, forklift operation, and plant operation.
- Encouraging establishment and ownership of businesses that will provide training opportunities in addition to employing people and making a profit.
- Mentorship of new businesses to ensure success, profitability and success for the business in terms of long term survival including education in business basics of record keeping, employee relationships, taxation responsibilities, and any other business management requirements necessary.

Join Our Cause
Today few descendents of the original inhabitants are connected to country as they once were. Settlement had a devastating effect on the people. As a result not many are connected to their country or indeed own their own land under today’s rule of law.
